How it began

I was in my twenties,
and I cared about cars.

There was a house I often visited — a calligrapher, and a friend of my father's. One day a scroll was hanging there. A single character, alone on a large sheet of gasenshi paper. Storm.

I did not move from that spot for close to an hour. My teacher asked me: “You can read that?” I could barely make a sound. “It says arashi.” Classical calligraphy is often unreadable to an ordinary person — that is why he asked.

He said: come to me tomorrow.

It was so sudden that I asked for a week to think it over. My parents knew him well. They said: if he was not joking, go — that is how well known he was.

A week later I told him exactly that, as nervously as I had said the character. “I do not joke about such things.” I was admitted that same day, and started that same evening.

I had not held a brush since middle school. I began with how to hold it, and how to grind ink. Everyone else in that room was already a teacher of their own school.

“If you want to write beautiful characters, you do not need to come here. Come so that one day your own heart can be expressed through the brush.”

Work took me away after three years. But I am still writing — because of that teacher, and because of that one character. Classical calligraphy, then design calligraphy. What runs underneath has never changed. I write as though staining ink with my heart, and letting it flow.

The name

Mudō — the way of dreams.
I chose it myself, and there was
only ever one candidate.

At the time I was chair of the PTA at my children's primary school. Through an unexpected turn, I was asked to write a single word for the schools of my district: 絆 — the bond between people.

It would carry the dreams of children at 38 primary schools. I had my own outsized dream too — to hold a solo exhibition in New York. And I wanted those children to live holding dreams just as large.

So: dream, and way. I did not hesitate.

I write as though staining ink with my heart, and letting it flow.
